Quirks

I've decided to start a running list of interesting/favorite things about BYU. Random things I noticed and things I like to do while on campus- they make life enjoyable while going to classes.

1- First would definitely be that in the Harold B. Lee Library, the girl bathrooms are specialized. And by that I mean when you first walk in them, on the 4th and 5th floors at least, you find yourself in a sitting room. It has a large window and some mirrors and the best part- couches! This is the perfect place to take a nap/break from studying. Although most of the hallways throughout campus are lined with couches, it's a little awkward to fall asleep as people going to class walk by. So- the library bathroom- I took a nap there today and it was so nice!

2- Every building has handicap doors. These doors are heavier than the others and so close a little slower. If someone is only a few feet in front of me and opens one, I see if I can jump through the opening without touching or pushing the door. It makes me feel like an action movie star and it keeps passing times adventurous.

3- Before I check a man out, I must check his left ring finger out. All too often I have thought, "Man that guy is really cute........ mm and so is his ring. And that woman next to him, she is also wearing a ring. And what the?! How did I miss that little baby?!" Rule of BYU- if they're attractive and an RM, they are probably married, engaged, or secretly weird and thus not married.

4- All structures on campus have some sort of religious parallel. Or everyone who goes here is so used to making analogies, it doesn't matter what you're looking at- I'm sure it applies! Like this morning- there is a HUGE staircase leading up to campus from the PE area. Holy cow. And I walk up it at least once, usually twice depending on the day, a day. Someday I'll count the steps- anyway, this morning I looked up at it and couldn't help but be reminded of climbing the tower of Babel for some reason. Please correct me if there isn't a tower of Babel, or is it Babylon? Either way, you know the gospel has made an imprint on your life when you climb a staircase thinking how people used to climb to be closer to God.

5- Being a musical genius is no big deal. So you can play piano and you've been doing it all your life? Awesome. Ah and you play violin? Well that's great. Oh you can play by ear? Neat so can he. I love the art program at BYU because there are so many talented people, but I think I'd be a little peeved if I was an amazing musician and I just got shoved to the side with all the other ones. Maybe that's why I'm not- I kind of like individual recognition.
Well that's all I can think of for now, but rest assured, there will be more!

Ah, BYU. I remember this odd feeling of mediocrity when I realized that not only was everyone one of the smart kids in high school, but that they also played several musical instruments, were the star athelete in their high school, and spent the last summer in Africa helping the starving children. And they could always come up with way better analogies than me-- like, that staircase? It's not like the tower of Babel, it's like your studies: you have to take them one step at a time in order to enjoy the view from the top. Or some crap like that. Go Cougars!

Yeah except the people who were climbing the Tower of Babel to get closer to God were struck down in his wrath for their refusal to come closer to God in the ways that he has outlined. But I digress =)

Also - taking a nap in the bathroom - yeah. What if it was stinky ?
